BAKU (Armenpress)–Unprecedented security measures–undertaken by US administration after the deadly suicide attacks in New York City and Washington–have taken place in Azerbaijan as well.
Baku-based Bilik Dunyasi news agency reported–all Azerbaijani citizens who had applied for entry visas to travel to the US were rejected. The rejection of so many applicants has never happened before.
Azeri analysts say there might be something else behind this move. They say that if these measures were applied to any other country–they would have been considered discriminatory.
The US Embassy in Baku enhanced security measures by banning traffic in areas near the embassy long before the terrorist attacks.
US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Ross Wilson was quoted by a newspaper saying that the road would open for traffic only when the embassy was sure the area was completely secure.
Analysts say Azerbaijani citizens were banned from visiting the US after the US State Department placed Azerbaijan on the list of countries which support international terrorism. First it was accused of backing separatists in Chechnya–and then Azerbaijan appeared on the list of countries where Osama bin Laden made phone calls to.
