YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The US embassy’s public affairs officer John Balian suggested either reducing the number of local mass media outlets in Armenia or finding appropriate markets for their products to increase both their efficiency and quality.
Speaking at a news conference today–Balian said that currently nine TV channels–seven radio stations and tens of newspapers are operating in Yerevan alone–whereas their number in the provinces is very restricted.
The absence of a well-developed market in Armenia and the ongoing economic collapse also have negative impact on the mass media–hindering its further development. Balian praised several private mass media outlets which have managed to survive despite the current economic turmoil. He said today’s reporters are more courageous than they were eight years ago.
He also said that the embassy is implementing a range of programs aimed at Armenian mass media development–including exchange programs–inviting guest experts–organization of workshops and so on. The embassy also provides mass media and public organizations with $200,000 in gran’s per year.
