WASHINGTON (Itar-Tass)–Pentagon press service official Anthony Cooper told Itar-Tass by telephone on Tuesday that the United States did not consider any plans to set up its military bases on the territory of Azerbaijan.
The official said the US Defense Department knows about pronouncemen’s by some Azerbaijani officials on the "advisability" of US military presence in the republic as "a guarantor of stability in the Caspian oil-bearing region." The United States–he said–does not have such plans. Cooper left without commenting on the speculations that Turkey could perform the role of such a "guarantor" in the region.
"The US has no plans to create military bases in Azerbaijan. I am not authorized to speak on behalf of Turkey," Cooper said.
