LOS ANGELES–“Resolving Nagorno-Karabakh is the key to unlocking Turkish-Armenian relations,” said Phillip Gordon during a July 3, 2009 meeting with 27 European Union political directors, as reported in a confidential cable released by Wikileaks and emanating from Stockholm on July 9 of the same year.
According to the same document, Gordon also saw the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict as an important step toward facilitating regional energy supplies.
“The Russians have been reasonably productive on this account, but it is unclear whether they are just going through the motions or are seriously engaged, particularly as a Nagorno-Karabakh solution would facilitate a Southern Corridor gas route,” Phillips said in the cable.
In response, according to the cable, EU Council Secretariat Director General Robert Cooper expressed doubts about Russia’s motivations about the Karabakh conflict.
“Cooper asserted that if the Russians really wanted to resolve Nagorno-Karabakh, they would have done so already,” Gordon reported in the cable.
When WikiLeaks began posting the US diplomatic cables on November 29, several documents from both Ankara and Baku signaled that both countries were, in fact, preconditioning the opening of the Turkey-Armenia border with the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
During the protocols process, State Department officials were quoted publicly as denouncing any preconditions in the protocols process, yet these documents, posted Sunday on the WikiLeaks site, suggest that behind closed doors, high-level State Department officials were advising European allies that a resolution to the conflict was key to the Turkey-Armenia issue.
In another confidential cable, dated October 10, 2008, from the US Embassy in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Amb. Tatiana Gfoeller reports on a meeting with the British Prince Andrew, who among other information revealed that he met with Azeri president Ilham Aliyev.
According to the cable, Prince Andrew told the ambassador that “Aliyev had received a letter from President Medvedev telling him that if Azerbaijan supported the designation of the Bolshevik artificial famine in Ukraine as ‘genocide’ at the United Nations, ‘then you can forget about seeing Nagorno-Karabakh ever again.’”
The WikiLeaks cables are also shedding light on the double-standards with which the US government has treated Azerbaijan.
An article published Monday by the German Der Spiegel—one of four news outlets that received the trove of 250,000-plus cables from WikiLeaks—and entitled “Boys and Their Toys: The US Befriends Azerbaijan’s Corrupt Elite,” details high-level US officials’ relations and dealings, among them then Vice-President Dick Cheney, with the most corrupt of Azeri officials.

this is all BS and everyone involved knows it. this is simply a a kabuki theater, totally devoid of any significance.
But the US State Department is correct that if Russia wanted Krabagh solved, it would have been by now.
Russia gives orders to Armenia and Armenia obeys. If I am wrong, tell me, but I think we are dreaming if we think that Yerevan does not take its orders from Moscow. Moscow will sell out Armenians again someday when it is convenient, just as it always has.
I did not need these documents to surface in order to know what was going on. Anyone in the Armenian community and the Armenian goverment taught if the US is for us or on our side…….:) stop smoking whatever you are……

To Phil: Fact, any superpower will use a weaker nation to their benefit. The point is, geopolitically, Armenian needs Russia and Russia needs Armenia, end of story. Don’t think like a Georgian fool, Armenians have everything to lose if they damage their partnership with Russia. Neither Russia, US, China or Europe, gives a damn about Armenia as a nation. But we have a chance here to take back a small piece of our homeland because it benefits a neighboring superpower at this decade, the way a powerful Islam right below Russia’s nose would benefit the west. I love the US for many things, but politics is a whore and most US politicians are total sluts. They would destroy Armenia is a heartbeat if that meant US currency would go up. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure Russia would do the same if it benefits them, but it doesn’t on todays map and Russia’s growing problem with neighboring states. A powerful Turkey allied with Azerbaijan is a nightmare for Russia. We are their only ally in the Region…Think about it.

Replying to RAY… your position on the community seeking self preservation e al… I disagree… When a nation has been decimated… scattered, seeking safe havens in the civilized nations… to me it appears that if the Survivors had not sought to seek out and create their Armenian families… some married without having met one another, were paired off, if only to be with a mate who would know of their pain,language and more… I heard some met via exchanging photos… one in America (when there were few Armenian women here) and one came to marry via Cuba to New York. These brave Survivor families, educated their children, even through colleges… So today the world over we Armenians number in the tens of millions… Else, as the Turks had hoped… intermarriages would have caused the elimination of the Armenians on our planet… Turkish style! Of course being Armenian was- to me still is- what should be an uppermost consideration in what our youth today should address. We are not as other nationalities, secure on our own homelands, weArmenians are still building a nation… we are still the heirs to all that which the Survivors had to contend… this need to regain our Armenia… it does take consideration and efforts..but Survivors – the world over, did. So, here we are… in the tens of millions…. and going strong! Didn’t mean to go on… but I’m glad I was able to ‘share my thoughts’ with Ray.
