DORTMUND, Germany—German soccer team Borussia Dortmund have announced that they have agreed a deal to sign Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Shakhtar Donetsk.
The deal is reported to be worth around 25 million euros and the 24-year-old will sign a four-year contract with the UEFA Champions League finalists, after completing his medical on Monday.
A statement on the club’s official website read: “The Borussia Dortmund AG and FC Shaktar Donetsk have agreed on the transfer of the Armenian international Henrikh Mkhitaryan, born on the 21th of January 1989, to Borussia Dortmund.
“Borussia Dortmund and the player have reached a general agreement about the financial conditions of a contract running until the 30th of June 2017. Details are yet to be agreed upon.”
The Armenia international, who broke the Ukranian Premier League record by scoring 44 times in 106 matches for Shakhtar, becomes Jurgen Klopp’s third major signing, after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Sokratis Papastathopoulos arrived earlier this month.
Really weak step. Should have waited one more year and then gone to Premier League. This is going to be a slow death now. Whoever his adviser was.. shame on you – Bundesliga, really? Borussia? REALLY? Should have checked their history first. They just came to be because Bayern had a slump, how far were they behind last time in the championship? Yes, yes, CL… never going to happen again.
Congratulations Henrikh on joining a club that has announced its goal as “being the second best team next to Bayern”.
In a few years the Bundesliga will overtake the EPL in both viewership and monetary profits. Dortmund gets 80,000 fans filling its stadium every league match, it’s a tremendous atmosphere and a top club with serious ambition and the muscle to contend. Last year’s success is nothing to sneer at. For non-football fans that may be reading, this transfer is akin to playing for Barcelona (since that seems to be the most known club), an Mkhitaryan will be playing for one of the best current teams. The only drawback is that he’ll be playing alongside two turks.
Shame on you for the comment re he will be playing alongside two Turks. And I won’t even comment on “this is like Barcelona”. 20 or so better clubs around Europe.
Nice irony, third game and he is already injured. Maybe Premier League wouldn’t have been such a good idea after all…
Don’t mix politics with sports….playing alongside two Turks!!!! Give me a #*$ing break! Shame, Shame, Shame!
Where was he supposed to go… Liverpool? They haven’t been relevant in 20 years… BvB made the finals and won the bundasliga back to back before last year… Get your head out of your ass… German league way better than PL
Not bad “25 million euros and the 24-year-old will sign a four-year contract with the UEFA Champions League finalists”!
I was hopping he would have joined Liverpool. What a disappointment.
(I am german, sorry if i have poor english). First of all, Klopp is a world class, ambitious manager who nurtures talants such as henrikh. He evolves players and helps them reach their full potential. Just look at how players such as lewandowski, gotze, reus and gundogan have grown under the wing of Jurgen. They are now incredible players, thanks to klopp. Players agree that klopp is a great manager and the longer he stays, the more success bvb will have. Bvb can and will win trophies. They have made it to the CL final, outplaying every team. They beat bayern to the bundesliga champions title 2 years in a row. They came 2nd in the bundesliga this latest season. People must understand that the premier league isnt the best league, it just has the most money in it. Bayern and dortmund would beat any Epl team. Borussia didnt lose to bayern in last years bundesliga also. For a club with much less prestige and money i think that they are doing better. Right now, i think borrussia is the best step for Mkhitaryan in becoming a great player and i think he will help dortmund in their fight to improve on a very good year. We will see now if he floureshes or fails.
Stopped reading after Bayern and Dortmund would beat any EPL team… oh, if BVB is so great, how come Lewandowski wants to leave so desperately, Götze has already left and Sahin left for Real and only came back after failing? Anyway, good luck Henrikh with that injury.
For the Borussia Dortmund management team was A very clever move to have a player like Mkhitaryan in there future competitions, congratulation to Borussia Dortmund and good luck Henrikh.
Liverpool and premier league should have been more enticing. He would have had greater opportunities in the premier league.
Congratulations! This is not the time to criticize and be a Monday morning quarterback. This is the time to support, congratulate and wish Mr. Mkhitaryan continued success at his craft. Be proud and supportive.
Go Henrikh….Go Dortmund.
