The leaders of the Greek and Turkish-occupied segments of Cyprus began a new round of talks on Tuesday, with the aim of achieving reunification of the now ethnically split island nation.
Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and the leader of the Turkish-occupied north, Dervis Eroglu, met inside the U.N.-controlled buffer zone to announce the restart of talks after a 20-month stalemate.
“We welcome the agreement reached on February 11 in Nicosia by the President of the Republic of Cyprus and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community on the resumption of negotiations aimed at resolving the Cyprus problem under the auspices of the UN and share expectations of the international community for a long-term and mutually acceptable solution to the problem,” Balayan said.
Cyprus was split in 1974 when Turkey invaded the island after Cypriot efforts to reunite with Greece. Only the internationally recognized Greek Cypriot south has European Union membership.
Yerevan should not welcome anything, but condemn Turkey for its occupation of Cyprus and its hypocritical stance on Artsakh!!!
