Aram I explained that in the case that Turkey’s Constitutional Court does not approve the claim, the Holy See of Cilicia will appeal to the European Court of Human Rights. “We will not wait for positive approaches by Turkey and are ready to go to the end and apply to the ECHR,” the Catholicos said.
“This certainly does not mean that efforts on the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide will be abandoned, but recognition should provide for compensation. If we do not make this step, we will soon appear in quite a closed circle. Recognition – what next? What will happen after that? It is necessary that Hay Tad comes out of this closed circle,” said Aram I.
“The Catholicosate of Cilicia, which is situated in Sis, the capital city of historical Cilicia, has a symbolic significance for Cilicia and all Armenians,” Aram I said.
In his address Aram I also referred to the issue of international recognition of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic, underscoring that it must be a core issue for Armenians. “Nagorno Karabakh’s security is very important for us. We should do everything possible to maintain security in Karabakh and to establish sustainable peace. Karabakh’s independence is also Armenia’s independence,” said the Catholicos.
Excellent, the time has come!
Dear Catholicos, be strong and go all the way. The entire Armenian world is behind You.
About time.
This is long overdue and as usual I’m glad to see the Holy See of Cilicia taking the lead on such an important initiative. Our head of state in Yerevan and Hay Tad need to wake up and support similar initiatives not the defeatist protocol. We must take charge and go after what rightfully belongs to us. Compensation for the Armenian genocide is our legal right. It’s time for Turkey to repent and restore our belongings.
Bravo Aram Vehapur, your resolute leadership and courage is always appreciated.
Why did it take 100 years to take this action? In fact, Armenia should have spearheaded the cause from the beginning. But being under the gag rule of then Mother Soviet Russia, it wasn’t until almost 50 years later that the 1965 Yerevan demonstration took place. Back then, just like now, Mother Russia was only interested in her interests and prevented any discussion of the Armenian Genocide. In her logic, if it doesn’t serve Russian interests, then justice and human rights have no meaning. Today, it is still left up to a fledgling diasporan church to demand justice. Armenia is still not free to move forward with initiatives that actually benefit Armenians. Every decision must still first take into account the interests of the regional hegemonic bear of the north.
