YEREVAN—Yerevan Mayor Taron Markaryan announced his resignation Monday, apparently bowing to mounting pressure since the change of power in Armenia that occurred with the election of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on May 8.
“Along the path we have passed together I have tried to hear the voice of each of you and solve the problems facing the capital, have been faithful to my promise and my plans. In that regard, I expect forgiveness from all compatriots with whom our joint path is getting interrupted,” Markaryan said in a brief statement he issued.
He thanked all his colleagues at the City Council, the City Hall and the district administration staffs, partner structures and individuals for the collective efforts.
Ahead of the announcement, Markaryan met with members of the Republican Party of Armenia faction of the Yerevan City Council.
Making the announcement about the meeting with Republican Party of Armenia, another city council member Roza Sirunyan praised Markaryan for what she claimed were the many changes and improvements that had occurred in the city.
The City Council has one month to elect a new mayor, who will be nominated by the various parties represented in the council.
Since the power change in Armenia, certain groups staged protests in front of City Hall demanding Markaryan’s resignation. He ascended to Yerevan’s mayorship in 2011 and was reelected in 2017.
“…I have been faithful to my promise and my plans.” Yes, faithful to the oligarchs and their scheming plans. Much appreciated, now get lost!
Well said:))××

To me it looks like the present governmeñt is going too fare. How come that now everybody is corrupt? Second the try to destabilize the Armenian Church. Why? For Armenians the Church is a crusual point. Such an act will in the long run split the Armenian society. I advice the present government to stop thosr unreasonable acts and start buildig the country.
I agree.
If they are corrupt let them go but do not let them take even a penny out of the country .no money shall leave the country .unfortunatly these are the remnants of soviet system .Stay put Armenia & Armenians vage avelee lav gella .getse haiastan .
What a shame that some Armenians could behave in such a way as they Been carrying their duties towards their country and the nation.
All the best to a great little Armenian.
