Armenian Athletes Garner Several Medals on First Day of Competition
Team Armenia has garnered several medals on the first day of the World Military Wrestling Championships, known as the CISM games, being held in Yerevan, with the opening ceremonies held earlier Wednesday at the Karen Demirchyan Sports Arena.
Armenia’s Defense Minister Suren Papikyan attended the ceremonies, along with other high-ranking defense officials.

The ceremony featured the screening of a film about the achievements of the Armenian wrestling and Armenian history. Flag-bearers of participating countries then entered the hall.
CISM President Colonel Nilton Rolim delivered remarks, wishing participants luck, while Papikyan declared the competitions open.
“Sport unite people around ideas of honest competition, fair fight, strength serving for good, will aimed at beautiful goals, solidarity, as well as tolerance and peace. And it is no coincidence that Armenia and its capital city of Yerevan never abandon their sports traditions,” Papikyan said.
400 participants from 24 countries are participating in the 37th CISM World Military Wrestling Championships in Yerevan.
Armenia’s Andranik Avetisyan, Suren Aghajanyan and Gaspar Terteryan already garnered gold medals in their category matches, while Sarkis Begoyan won a silver medal, with Ashot Khachatryan and Hrachyan Poghosyan winning bronze medals.
In the women’s competition, Armenia’s Elen Babajanyan won a silver medal.
