VATICAN CITY (CNS)–The Vatican has officially recognized one of the victims of the Armenian Genocide as a martyr for the faith. The martyrdom decree issued April 24 in the cause of Armenian Archbishop Ignatius Choukrallah Maloyan of Mardin–killed in 1915–clears the way for his beatification.
The Vatican did not announce a date for the beatification of Archbishop Maloyan–but it is possible that the ceremony would take place in Armenia in September if a long-discussed papal trip there is arranged.
