YEREVAN (Armenpress)–"The authorities of Nagorno Karabakh are obliged to ensure the defense of human rights considered so vital by the European Union–the preconditions of which are the safeguarding of elections on every level; the stance of certain governmen’s therefore is incomprehensible," said Vahan Hovhanissian–ARF Bureau member and chair of the Armenian Parliament’s national security and defense committee–commenting on Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry’s objections to the upcoming presidential elections in Nagorno Karabakh (echoed by the governmen’s of Turkey–Saudi Arabia and Switzerland)–and in answer to the European Union’s declaration refusing to recognize the legitimacy of the upcoming elections.
Hovhannisian also noted that although the attitudes of Turkey and Saudi Arabia were expected to a degree–the attitude of Switzerland–a democratically stable nation–is simply unacceptable. According to Hovhannisian–it is also odd that the interest in Nagorno Karabakh deepens not in instances of border clashes between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan–but only when Karabakh systematically strives to implement and safeguard democratic principles.
"The Authorities of the Republic of Armenia are obliged to take a more stern approach concerning such irresponsible statemen’s and swift appropriate action to prevent such policies by Azerbaijani authorities," added Hovhanissian.
