YEREVAN (Armenpress)-Armenia’s Social Security Minister Aghvan Vartanian met on Wednesday with Syria’s charge d’affaires in Armenia Ambassador Ghassan Raslan to review potential bilateral cooperation on social security matters.
Vartanian said that a large portion of society including pensioners–the disabled–senior citizens and children require state support–and added that the Armenian government’s poverty reduction program is a top priority. Considering the similarities of Armenian and Syrian national traditions–Vartanian said he would review Syrian social security policy to become familiar with existing mechanisms.
Raslan said that although each society has distinct traditions–there are nevertheless general issues that could involve close cooperation. Speaking about Armenian social structures for the disabled–Vartanian emphasized that the prosthesis center in Armenia could serve as a model for other countries in the region.
