YEREVAN (Armenpress)–NATO will no longer remain passive in its drive to establish “stability and security” in the South Caucasus region, the Director of NATO’s Euro-Atlantic Integration and Partnership Program said Tuesday during the annual conference of the Black Sea Security Program.
NATO is very concerned with the current situation in the South Caucasus, Yaroslav Skonizhka said, adding that the alliance has already “worked out several programs.”
If the said programs are executed, the role of the region’s three countries will “gradually increase” in the international arena, said Skonizhka,
The West desires peace in the region and works toward that end, according to the US representative to the conference, General Gary Johnson.
The Russian representative, General Vyacheslav Proshkin, for his part said there Russia is keen on facilitating the development of the region, but added that there are numerous roadblocks to realizing the goal.
Representatives from 16 countries and international organizations traveled to Yerevan on Monday to participate in the four-day conference, hosted at the Drastamat Kanayan Institute for National Strategic Research. Azerbaijan declined its invitation to participate.
