Yerevan, Armenia ‘s Armenia Fund ("Hayastan" All-Armenian Fund) is pleased to announce the completion of the water supply projects in Hadrut city, Vank village of the Martakert region and the Spitakashen village of the Martuni region. The total construction cost was 669 million AMD ($2.23 million USD).
“In Nagorno Karabakh ‘s a region abundant with water resources, access to water has historically been a problem. During the Soviet Azerbaijani rule, little investment has been made into the basic infrastructure of Armenian villages. Knowing that water is crucially important for the economic development of communities, “Hayastan” All-Armenian Fund has been paying a special attention to water supply projects throughout its 17 years of existence”, said the Fund’s Acting Executive Director Ara Vardanyan.
The Hadrut city drinking water project cost 420 million AMD ($1.4 million USD) and was chiefly sponsored by Fonds Armenien de France, the Fund’s French affiliate. The water pipeline stretches more than 22 kms (14 miles) bringing water to 2,900 residents of Hadrut city from the Arjaghbyur springs.
Final inspections are made in Spitakashen, momen’s before the tap is turned on.The construction of the second water distribution project, Kaghartsin-Spitakashen, was completed thanks to the sponsorship of Fundo Nacional Armenia, the Fund’s Argentinean affiliate. The 8 km (5 miles) long water main has a total cost of 80 million AMD ($267,000 USD). Ever since the completion of the project, all 471 residents of Martuni’s Spitakashen village enjoy a reliable supply of clean drinking water.
Even during the Soviet times, residents of picturesque Vank village of Martakert region had serious water shortages. The inner water pipeline network was built in 1956 and has deteriorated beyond repair since then.

“Every single one of 1,650 residents of our village has been waiting for this moment for a long time. We were delighted to learn about the Fund’s commitment to this project. At last we have regular supply of fresh water. Even bad weather conditions did not halt the construction and we are truly grateful to “Hayastan” All-Armenian Fund”, said Mr. Fedya Ohanyan, Vank village Mayor.
The project was sponsored jointly by the Boghossian Foundation (Switzerland), Armenia Fund USA, the Fund’s U.S. East Coast affiliate, Fonds Armenien de France and the St. Sargis Charity Trust (UK) with a total cost of 169 million AMD ($563,000 USD).
