FRESNO–During a visit to San Joaquin Valley over the weekend, Rep. Adam Schiff met with the Armenian-American community and pledged to reintroduce the Armenian Genocide resolution in Congress.
Some 75 community members gathered at the Armenian Center in an event hosted by the Armenian National Committee of Central California.
The Fresno Bee reported that Schiff expects to be hit with “an onslaught” of lobbying against the bill by Turkey.
But Schiff said virtually every member in Congress knows that the genocide is a fact of history, and that President Barack Obama understands the issue, reported the Fresno Bee.
"Obama spoke out against the firing of the ambassador," Schiff was quoted by the Fresno Bee when referring to the dismissal of John Evans, the US ambassador to Armenia for publicly using the term "Armenian genocide."
Schiff was in Central California to discuss the economy at a special Sunday session of the Fresno City Council.
