BAKU (Tehran Times)–Russia may take part in the construction of a nuclear power plant in Azerbaijan, the Russian Deputy Energy Minister Vyacheslav Sinyugin said in an interview with the Baku-based ANS television channel.
“Russia is ready to give Azerbaijan its proposals and ideas” on the construction of a nuclear power plant, he said.
Sinyugin said that Russia “has vast experience and potentials in the atomic energy industry” and is implementing many overseas projects in this sphere. “We believe that these projects are competitive enough,” he said.
Azerbaijan had planned to build a nuclear power plant back in the 1980s. It was to be built near the Navagi settlement 100 kilometers south of Baku. But the nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl and the collapse of the Soviet Union put those plans on indefinite hold.
