ANKARA (AP)–Turkey’s foreign minister said Thursday that the country’s ambassador to Sweden will return to Stockholm by the start of the week.
Turkey recalled Ambassador Zergun Korutürk earlier this month after Sweden’s parliament narrowly approved a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide.
Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told broadcaster CNNTurk in an interview aired late Wednesday that Turkey was “satisfied” by Swedish government statements opposing the parliament’s move.
Turkey also recalled its ambassador to Washington after a key U.S. congressional committee approved a similar resolution.
In related news, Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said Frday that the Swedish Parliament will hold a second vote on the Armenian Genocide resolution next year.
“It is wrong to adopt political decisions on the events which took place 100 years ago. What should be in question now is 2015, when Turkey may become a full-fledged EU member, rather than 1915,” Bildt was quoted by Turkish NTV as saying.
The Swedish top diplomat gave assurances that his country was a friend of Turkeys and said he hoped the strained ties between his country and Turkey would shortly improve and normalize, RIA Novosti reported.
