YEREVAN (ArmRadio)—An organization representing Armenian refugees from Azerbaijan has sent a formal letter to the United Nations Security Council, urging the body to respond to Azerbaijan’s worsening rhetoric of racism and violence against Armenians.
The letter, sent by the Assembly of Authorized Representatives of Azerbaijani Armenians, expressed concern over Azerbaijan’s regular dismissal of the pogroms of Armenians in Baku in 1990 and Sumgait in 1989. It also urges the Security Council to take action against Azerbaijan’s rapidly growing military budget and threats to launch a new war against Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.
Ararat Tsaturyan, a representative of the Assembly, told ArmRadio that the letter follows similar appeals sent to the UN and the OSCE that have yet to be answered.
Tsaturyan said the letter notes that Armenian refugees form Azerbaijan have settled in Nagorno Karabakh. He added that the Assembly estimates about 50,000 Armenian refugees from Azerbaijan currently live in Karabakh.
Assembly Secretary Edward Poladov, meanwhile told ArmRadio that the organization has asked the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to grant formal representation to the community in the PACE subcommittee on Nagorno Karabakh. He explains that the subcommittee would undoubtedly need to address humanitarian issues and that the issue of refugees from Azerbaijan should be considered a priority in that regard.
