GLENDALE—On Wednesday, May 11 a diverse group of parents, students and community members gathered at the Karamanoukian Glendale Youth Center to learn about federal, state and local laws pertaining to teenagers. The forum entitled “Teenagers and the Law” was organized by the Armenian National Committee of Glendale in partnership with Der-Parseghian Law Group and Document Preparation Solutions.
“The very diverse group present at the forum is a clear indication of how imperative such topic matters are to community members from all walks of life. We are proud to have partnered with Der-Parseghian Law Group and Document Preparation Solutions in providing parents and students the necessary framework for them to protect their rights and be aware of their responsibilities,” stated Executive Director of ANC Glendale, Elen Asatryan.
The program began at 7 p.m. with welcoming remarks by ANC-Glendale Executive Director, Elen Asatryan, followed by comments from President of Document Preparation Solutions, Arick Gevorkian who assisted in preparing the presentation for the evening.
The main portion of the forum was conducted by Mary Der-Parseghian of Der-Parseghian Law Group and covered such topic matters as age of majority, privacy, social networking, supervision, parents’ rights, driving, parties, alcohol, smoking, curfew laws, drugs, emancipation, weapons, as well as parents’ and students’ rights within the Glendale Unified School District At the end of the program, parents and students participated in a Q&A session that raised a variety of questions ranging from privacy settings on the internet to issues at school sites.
“I was delighted to see so many parents, kids and professionals comment positively on the workshop after the event. It’s evident that our community is in dire need to attain important information on issues of law, education, parenting, social behaviors, career development, etc. I’m pleased that numerous non-profits organizations and schools are contacting Mary and I to present these kinds of forums to their members, parents and students,” noted Arick Gevorkian of Document Preparation Solutions Inc.
“In the almost decade of my practice I have found that people’s perception of the law is filled with error, gossip and even created material gathered from unreliable sources. These misconceptions are what undermine people’s ability to protect their individual rights and that of their loved ones. I am confident that the community forum on various topics of the law assisted in alleviating these misconceptions in our community,” stated Mary Der-Parseghian.
Community members who were unable to attend the forum may visit the ANC Glendale website at www.ancglendale.org to obtain a copy of the Kids and the Law handbook prepared by the California Bar Association.
The Armenian National Committee – Glendale Chapter advocates for the social, economic, cultural, and political rights of the city’s Armenian American community and promotes increased civic participation at the grassroots and public policy levels.
