Greuel discusses challenges, shares vision with Armenian community
STUDIO CITY—The Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region hosted a “Meet & Greet” with 2013 Los Angeles mayoral candidate Wendy Greuel on Thursday, September 29.
More than 50 community activists, students, professionals, and business leaders gathered at the home of longtime activists Michael and Natalie Mahdesian for the event. Those in attendance met with Greuel who discussed her previous work as a City Council Member and her current efforts as Los Angeles City Controller. Greuel also shared her vision for Los Angeles’ future during the gathering.
“As an organization that prioritizes civic engagement, the relationship between representatives and constituents are based on communication,” said ANCA-WR Board Member Nora Hovsepian. “The dialogue between those gathered here tonight and Wendy covered a broad range of topics. It truly demonstrates the level of engagement Armenians have in community life here in Los Angeles and the forum the ANCA-WR prides itself in creating.”
Among the guests attending the event were several representatives of various public offices and community organizations. Greuel discussed her efforts to promote greater awareness about the Armenian Genocide, work with Armenian community organizations to address quality of life issues in the San Fernando Valley, and addressed concerns from those gathered regarding the local economy and business climate within the City of Los Angeles.
Prior to her position as City Controller, Greuel was the former President Pro Tempore of the Los Angeles City Council representing the 2nd District, which includes portions of the San Fernando Valley.
Greuel is one of a number of individuals who have declared their candidacy in what promises to be an interesting mayoral election in 2013. Among her opponents are City Council President Eric Garcetti; City Councilwoman Jan Perry; and First Deputy Mayor Austin Beutner.
The event is part of the ongoing ANCA-WR Meet & Greet Series, where elected officials have the opportunity to discuss issues of significance to the Armenian American community and their constituents. The Meet & Greet series highlights the significant civic engagement of the Armenian American community throughout the Western Region and the United States, in all aspects of local, state and national politics.
