
GLENDALE—The Armenian National Committee of America – Glendale joined local supporters, activists, elected officials, community leaders and friends for its second Meet and Greet on September 19, 2013 at Renaissance Banquet Hall. The main speakers for the event included Dr. David Viar, the Superintendant of Glendale Community College appointed in July and Glendale Unified School District Board President Nayiri Nahabedian. The event gave guests an opportunity to learn about the organization’s achievements and goals in education and to provide an opportunity for the community to meet the newly appointed Board of Directors as well as ANCA Glendale’s Education Committee members.
Talar Malakian, Executive Director of ANCA Glendale, who served as the Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening opened the program by thanking those present for their continuous support of the Armenian National Committee of America – Glendale Chapter and for working with the organization on the common goal of bettering the City of Glendale and “celebrating the top notch education our students receive in this great city.”
Glendale Unified School District Boardmember Nayiri Nahabedian spoke about the successes of the School District this year while Dr. David Viar discussed his plans as Glendale Community College’s new Superintendant. The ANCA Glendale Education Committee Chair, Dr. Marisa Sarian, followed them by announcing the ANCA Glendale’s Path to College Forum as well as a new helpline ANCA Glendale is setting up for parents and students in the District.
“We have been partners with Glendale Unified School District and Glendale Community College for years. We have a common goal and it is to better Glendale for future generations. That is our cause, that is our goal, and it is the same,” said Dr. Marisa Sarian.
Guests included former Assemblymember Anthony Portantino, Council Member Ara Najarian, Glendale Deputy Police Chief Carl Povilaitis, Mary Hovagimian from Congressman Adam Schiff’s office, Mary Manoukian from Assemblymember Mike Gatto’s office, members of GUSD Board of Education: Board President Nayiri Nahabedian and Armina Gharpetian, GCC Board of Trustees Anita Quinonez Gabrielian, Armine Hacopian, and Ann Ransford, GCC Superintendant Dr. David Viar, GUSD Assistant Superintendants, City & GUSD Department heads and staff, city commissioners, and representatives from community based organizations such as the Armenian Bar Association, Armenian Cultural Federation- Glendale, Glendale Teacher’s Association, ANCA Western Region, Committee for Armenian Students in Public Schools, ANCA Burbank and Pasadena, Armenian Relief Society, Woodbury University representatives, Glendale Association of Realtors, Homenetmen Ararat Chapter St. Mary’s Armenian Apostolic Church and others.
ANCA Glendale advocates for the social, economic, cultural, and political rights of the city’s Armenian American community and promotes increased civic participation at the grassroots and public policy levels.
