ANTELIAS–Prior to the Tehran Summit of the Organization of Islamic Conference–His Holiness Aram I–Catholicos of the Holy See of Cilicia–discussed with Lebanese President Elias Herawi issues concerning Nagorno-Karabakh and asked the President to participate in discussion of the matter at the Summit–in order to provide just and true information. Regarding this matter–the Catholicos also contacted officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The Pontiff stressed that the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh is not religious–but rather a matter of politics and justice–and–as such–should be dealt with in terms of human rights and a people’s right to self-determination.
According to a statement released by the Tehran Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church–while in Tehran–President Herawi telephoned Prelate Artak and expressed his high regard of Armenia’s–the Holy See of Cilicia and Catholicos Aram I. President Herawi also conveyed that during his meeting with Azeri President Gaidar Aliyev–he stressed the necessity of resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in a peaceful and political manner.
President Herawi also expressed a desire to visit the Prelacy–however was unable to do so due to the impacted schedule of the Summit.
