YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Defeating the European champion England in the final round–Armenia’s team won the honorary third place and became the bronze prize winner in the world team chess championship held in Lucerne–Switzerland.
It should be noted that despite obvious success Armenia’s team has gained at international contests–its participation in the world chess championship had been still undecided and only through Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s personal appeal was Armenia’s team allowed to attend the competition and justify the hopes.
Compared to the previous championship four years ago–Armenian chess players have shown a definite climb.
In the round with Georgia’s team–Armenia won 3:1 and beat 2.5-1.5 the Cuban players. Before the fourth round Armenia’s team was the fourth and managed to gain the victory in the final round.
