ZURICH—At 11:16 a.m. Pacific Standard Time on Saturday Armenia and Turkey signed the protocols on establishment and development of relations after a ‘glitch’ that delayed the signing for hours, requiring mediation by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
In a dramatic turn of events, the signing of the protocols on were delayed due to reported ‘glitches’ in an announcement to have been made after the signing.
Reportedly the glitches involved language in statements that were to be delivered after the signing ceremony.
After intense mediation by Clinton and other State Department officials, foreign minister Eduard Nalbandian of Armenia Ahemt Davutoglu of Turkey returned to a hall at Zurich University and signed the document, which now awaits the ratification by the parliaments of both countries.
The crisis stemmed from the two parties’, Turkey and Armenia, attempts to interfere in the statements, it was reported.
According to the speculation, Nalbandian wanted to refer in the statement to the 1915 killings of the Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Empire by using the word “genocide,” reported the Hurriyet newspaper. The Turkish side, on the other hand, wanted to refer to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the statement, something Armenia says has nothing to do with the normalization of ties with Turkey.
In pursuing the accord, Turkey won a commitment from Washington to step up its efforts to settle the dispute over the breakaway territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, an Armenian enclave in the Turkish ally of Azerbaijan, officials said.
In Istanbul, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, “Armenian demands in time will be very important. We’ll not bend in the face of those demands.” Erdogan assured that Turkey would not take any step that would leave Azerbaijan in difficulty. Asked about the meeting of the Armenian and Azeri presidents in Moldova last Thursday, he said a more positive step could be taken that would contribute to the normalization between Turkey and Armenia. “Despite this, we are in favor of developing relations with Armenia by protecting our good intentions and in a way that will not hurt Azerbaijan,” he told reporters.
ANCA Chairman Ken Hachikian made a statement following the signing of the Turkey-Armenia protocols Saturday.
“The success of Turkey in pressuring Armenia into accepting these humiliating, one-sided protocols proves, sadly, that genocide pays.”
“President Obama, rather than honoring his pledge to recognize the Armenian Genocide, went in exactly the opposite direction, applying the full force of our nation’s diplomacy to twist the arm of a landlocked and blockaded Armenia – a nation still struggling with the brutal legacy of its near-destruction – into accepting a dangerous set of protocols that call into question this very crime against humanity.”
“The ANCA and all Armenian Americans will continue our efforts to restore morality to our nation’s response to the Armenian Genocide, and, more broadly, to the cause of genocide prevention. We will also work to prevent Turkey from using this agreement to further its genocide denial campaign, to undermine the rights of the Armenian nation, or to threaten the freedom of Nagorno Karabakh.”
I think the real question to ask ourselves is, How exactly do we become the monkey wrench in between the gears… where are our leverage points, and where can we strategically intervene to move closer to our goals, and how can we measure such movement…

This is sickening. I did not grow up as an Armenian ever thinking that the mass killing of my people, an act of Genocide, will have to be determined by an international body. What is even more sickening is that those who are in power in Armenia have agreed to such a body. I wonder, how did these people get into such power positions, what are their personal gains? Maybe it is time for us to ask these questions openly.

Will Armenians never learn, whatever the sufferings, that they cannot trust turks ? This is a milestone on the road of our complete anhihilation.

When I was young, I made in a summer camp a turkish friend. We did not spoke much on that matter, but the last day of our vacation, he did not resist the temptation I guess, and he told me, his eyes shining with pride :

Everyone standing behind Nalbandian is our enemy. We should have recognized that and been aware of that throughout all these years. Everyone behind Nalbandian has been part of our demise. USA, Russia, France, Europe in general, turned their heads as we were brutally being massacred in the Jihad announced in Turkey, during WWI. Turkey massacred us in their Holy Jihad call in retaliation for all these Christian nations that were at war with it, took our lands and wanted to erase every last trace of our existence.
In the 94 years that followed, Europe and USA could have condemned Turkey many times over for our Genocide, just like they have done for the Holocaust, but they consistently did not. They were busy sniffing the smell of oil and bartering with our lands and historical rights. They were silent and indifferent to all our cries for justice, and they chose not to acknowledge the rightful self-determination of Karabagh. And lo and behold, they were all available today to witness the lamb coming to sign for yet another set of concessions.
WE ONLY HAVE OURSELVES TO BLAME, AND WE ONLY HAVE OURSELVES TO LEAN ON. We have been very nonchalant about our nation. These protocols have been crafted purposefully to silence the Diaspora, break it apart because the glue holding the Diaspora together has been the pursuit of our cause, and severing its ties with Armenia, so that Armenia can be more readily manipulated and engulfed by the Turkish pan Turkic machine.
We only have ourselves to blame also, for hanging from the mouths of all these foreign leaders to get their “acknowledgement” of our Genocide, AS IF THEY WERE NOT AWARE OF IT, instead of going after Turkey in all the legal ways available when many survivors were still around, property deeds were not lost and the crime was still fresh. I strongly believe, that out of all the players, Turkey is the one that is the most dumb founded that we did not resort to legal reparations so far. WE KNEW WHAT HAPPENED TO US… THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ENOUGH…
But we did not pursue that route; we were only whining to get countries to acknowledge our Genocide… when they really did not want to, because Turkey had lots to offer them in return for their silence. They are using the Genocide card to get what they want from Turkey. As long as Turkey gives them what they want they will not reveal that card!
We have to URGENTLY come up with new novice policies that will link the Diaspora legally to Armenia. This could be done by dual citizenship, or other creative laws. ALL Armenians should take part in voting for prepositions having to do with Armenia’s international and foreign policies. Some kind of a yearly “national tax” should be enforced for Armenians outside of Armenia. They can be exempt from this tax if they invest or own property in Armenia. This “tax” will entitle all Armenians with the right to vote on certain international and foreign policies. Whoever does not pay this tax, will lose that privilege…
None of our organizations such as the ANCA will have any credibility or viability if they are not affiliated with our homeland, and if we are not all on the same page with our national foreign policies. We should never again allow for one of our hands to be unaware of what the other one is up to. We should push for regular talks, and conferences between the Diaspora and Armenia. Legal and Civic unity is what we need to pursue aggressively.
There is jubilation tonight in Turkey. Some are saying that announcements have been made that the last 94 year burden has been lifted off their shoulders. Let Turkey win this battle, let’s focus our minds on winning the War!

I think a Committee must be founded in Armenia from Diasporan organisations AND the Opposition in Armenia. This committee must work to prevent the ratification of Protocols and/or try to put the regime down in Armenia.

This particular day when I first heard of the signing of the protocols put me in a total shock.. not because i was not expecting it but for the effect it truly had on my skin.. i did not know how badly i would take.. so bad that I was in a daze for hours…I could not believe I lost my county and land to the murderors, to Turks..YET AGAIN….

good for Turkey is good for the United States. Armenians need to recognise that they are on their own
and have always been so. Nobody gives a damn about injustice unless there is some advantage, say,

Politics is something I enjoy but not much of a believer..:) but history I love.. the only problem is I can’t remember the names, and dates of some of the events.. Only 30 something and already lost memory..:) It is the stress of my country’s situation that caused it..
