BOSTON–On September 30, 2008, the Armenian Bar Association held a networking reception for Armenian attorneys at Suffolk University Law School in Boston. The event was hosted by Sonya Nersessian, Chair of the Armenian Bar Association, and Christine Engustian, Secretary of the Armenian Bar Association. Special guests were the Tavitian Fellows, a group of fifteen professionals from the Republic of Armenia, who are currently spending a semester at Tufts University Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
This group of Tavitian Fellows included attorneys from the Chamber of Advocates, Civil Appellate Court and General Prosecutor’s Office, a deputy Dean of Yerevan State University and Associate Professor of Conflict Studies, an Associate Professor in the faculty of Law at Yerevan State University, a lecturer at Yerevan State University who is also an Academic Fellow at the Open Society Institute, a staff attorney with the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative in Armenia, a Senior Attorney with US AID Armenia Tax Improvement Program, and a legal specialist for international donor projects from the Ministry of Finance and Economy. Tavitian Fellows also included a division head and legal advisors to the Central Bank of Armenia, a program officer for media and anti-corruption with the Eurasia Partnership Foundation, a Third Secretary from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a consultant to the Ani Narod Memorial Fund.
The Tavitian Foundation, Inc. was established in 1995 by Mr. Assadour Tavitian, founder of Syncsort, Inc., and has as its main mission to provide scholarship assistance for students of Armenian descent. Since 1999 the Foundation has also sponsored over 100 young professionals from Armenia, such as the above group, in advanced training programs at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. Dr. Joyce Barsam is Vice President and Trustee of the Tavitian Foundation.
