YEREVAN (Arka) — The head coach of Armenian football club Ulisses Yerevan, Gagik Simonyan, was arrested by the National Security Service ( NSS) on charges of a sweepstakes scam. The National Security Service said the fraud was revealed as a result of an investigation.
Simonyan was revealed to be working with Ulisses defender Hayk Hunanyan, the administrator of Ulisses-2 Ara Azaryan and assistant coach Ruben Arushanyan. The 4 men had conspired with a Toto bookmaker office employee to make bets worth USD 1000-3000.
Then, these men secured the desired results of the matches to make illegal revenue, which was later divided among the group’s members and some football players.
The NSS said it has opened a criminal case on the grounds of Article 201 of the Criminal Code. (Bribing participants and organizers of professional sports and commercial entertainment competitions).
Simonyan and Azaryan were arrested, while Arushanyan and Hunanyan were detained.
Yerevan Ulisses won the champion’s title for 2012-2013season that came as a big surprise. This season the club has been at the bottom, having collected only two points after 15 matches.
