Armenian Grandmaster Levon Aronian–has entered the next round of the FIDE World Cup Chess Championships–after beating his opponent–Kazakhstan’s Darmen Sadvakasov–in round two of matches. He beat Ali Frhat of Egypt in round one.
The championships began on November 27 in Khanty-Mansyisk–Russia and will continue until December 17. The event replaces what was known as the FIDE Knockout World Championship that produced world champions Karpov–Khalifman–Anand–Ponomariov–and Kasimdzhanov.
This year’s championships feature 128 of the world’s strongest players–vying for the $1.5 million prize.
