BURBANK–The Armenian National Committee of Burbank will honor Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich at its 4th Annual Banquet on Friday, May 8, 2009 at ARBAT Banquet Hall, 711 S. San Fernando Road in Burbank.
“Supervisor Antonovich will be recognized by the ANC of Burbank for his unwavering support for U.S. recognition of the Armenian Genocide and efforts to increase awareness among Los Angeles County residents of this crime against humanity” stated ANC Burbank spokesman Stepan Boyajian.
Michael D. Antonovich, a native of Los Angeles County, has served the two million residents of Los Angeles County’s Fifth Supervisorial District since 1980. The district, over two thousand square miles in area, includes all or part of the San Gabriel, Pomona, San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys. The district is home to more than 150,000 residents of Armenian descent.
As a government/history teacher for the Los Angeles Unified School District in 1966, Mike credits his fifth grade teacher for the inspiration to enter public life and was elected to the Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustees in 1969. He served in the California State Assembly from 1972 to 1978 and rose to become the Republican Whip.
In 1980, Mike was elected to serve the people of Los Angeles County as a member of the Board of Supervisors. His 29 years on the Board has been characterized by his determined defense of taxpayers and their right to limited and effective government.
The annual function organized by the Burbank Chapter of the Armenian National Committee presents an opportunity for the local chapter to recognize and honor individuals, businesses, and organizations for their efforts to promote greater appreciation for the Armenian heritage, harmony between the various ethnic groups residing in Burbank, and public awareness about the Armenian Genocide.
More than 300 supporters attended last year’s banquet to pay tribute to Congressman Adam Schiff, the Burbank Fire Department, Seta Javor of Woodbury University, Burbank Unified School District Armenian Club youth activist Anna Simonyan, and ANC volunteer Hagop Hergelian.
Honorees who will be recognized along with Supervisor Antonovich at this year’s banquet will be announced in the coming weeks.
Assembly Assistant Majority Leader Paul Krekorian will be Honorary Chairman of the Banquet. The function will begin with a social hour and silent auction at 7:00 p.m. and followed by dinner and program at 8:00 p.m. The evening will conclude with entertainment and music performed by local artists.
The ANC of Burbank promotes and serves the local community by working and developing grassroots programs, such as: voter registration projects, social services, partnerships with public schools on education regarding the Armenian Genocide, and community relations.
