BAKU (Armenpress)–The European Parliament announced Friday that it would suspend its financial assistance package to Azerbaijan–citing the recent deplorable presidential elections as its reason.
Under an agreement reached in 1996 between the European body and Azerbaijan–the latter was to receive more than $50 million in assistance.
BBC radio reported that the suspension decision came following the release of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s report on the Azeri presidential election–during which numerous violations were cited.
The motion to suspend aid to Azerbaijan was presented by Portuguese representative Carlos Jiment and was adopted unanimously by the Europarliament.
