YEREVAN (Yerkir)–The chairman of the 1915 Genocide Recognition Commission–historian Tessa Hoffman–released a statement on Tuesday saying that in its attempt to enter the European Union–Turkey cannot avoid the recognition of the 1915 Armenian Genocide–acknowledgment of which would be "not only another big contribution in preventing future genocides–but also a condition for improving Armenian-Turkish relations."
Hoffman also called on the German parliament to assist in fostering understanding between the nations.
On April 13–2000–the commission submitted an appeal to the German parliament requesting recognition of the Genocide of 1.5 million Armenia’s in the Ottoman Empire.
Formed in Munich–the commission was registered as a non-governmental organization in Armenia in 2003.
