ANKARA (Turkish Daily News)–The junior coalition partner in the German government–the Greens–has voiced opposition to weapon sales to Turkey–accusing it of human rights violations–the Anatolia news agency reported from Berlin.
The party’s spokeswoman on defense policies–Angelika Beer–told the daily Berliner Zeitung that her party is not in favor of selling weapons to Turkey–which she claimed to be a violator of human rights.
Beer said that the previous conservative government had earlier assured the Greens that it did not transfer any weapons to its NATO ally Turkey. She added that–if that information proves to be incorrect–then her party would move against selling weapons to Ankara.
Beer was referring to one of the conditions in the coalition protocol signed between the Social Democrats and the Greens on Tuesday–which linked the export of weapons to the recipient countries’ human rights record. "That case also applies to NATO-member Turkey," she was quoted by the newspaper as saying.
