STEPANAKERT—On Tuesday, Artsakh President Bako Sahakian received Dr. Pamela Steiner, a Harvard University professor and great granddaughter of Henry Morgenthau, the U.S. ambassador to the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, whose eye-witness accounts are some of the best historical records of the Armenian Genocide.
President Sahakian noted during the meeting that Henry Morgenthau has always enjoyed immense respect from the Armenian people and described the life and works of the diplomat as one of unwavering honor and morality.
Dr. Steiner certainly comes from a very distinguished line: the Morgenthaus.
We are all grateful to Henry Morgenthau, US Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire in 1915, who alerted the world to the Armenian genocide and spoke up for Armenians without hesitation.
I just wish to say that Dr. Steiner has held confidential meetings at Harvard between Armenians and Turks in an effort to “reconcile” them. This was several years ago. Until recently, she was reluctant to use the “G word” in reference to the Armenian genocide.
I would hope that if Dr. Steiner’s wish is to try to bring Azeris and Armenians together to reconcile them, I think the way she can be most helpful is to simply say publicly that Artsakh deserves full independence for reasons of history, demography, and ill-treatment by Azeris.
I wish the brief report informed us the reason for Pamela Steiner’s visit to Artsakh. For example, was it a goodwill or an investigative trip? Since several years ago she tried to recognize the two sides, I am wondering whether she has a similar plan regarding Artsakh and Azerbaijan.
When Geopolitics kicks in turuth and justice moves out, the US is more intereted in it’s geopolitical interests than to make justice to Armenian people, if with all the proofs the US has and still shamelessly deny justice to Armenian people, than you have the answer right there, try to find help sowhere else.
One of the other comments confirms my memory of this woman. She is one of those “reconciliation uber alles” types, so to my mind, anything she does is suspect, regardless of her very noble ancestry.
