TEHRAN (Xinhua)-Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati said Monday that his country is ready to be a mediator between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the Karabakh dispute.
Velayati made the remarks while meeting with the visiting Armenian National Assembly speaker–Babken Ararktsian–who arrived in Tehran Saturday.
Velayati was quoted by the official Iranian news agency– IRNA–as saying that the latest developmen’s in the Caucasus region and the Armenian-Azeri dispute were not in the interests of either nation.
"Tehran is expected to see the two nations of Armenia and Azerbaijan settle their problems soon based on a just and honorable solution," Velayati said.
Ararktsian underlined the need to normalize relations with the neighboring nation of Azerbaijan.
Ararktsian welcomed the initiative of Iran for a just settlement to the Karabakh conflict calling on countries in the region to join in finding a solution
Ararktsian also held talks with Iranian officials on possible Iranian investmen’s in Armenia–transfer of electricity from Iran to Armenia and construction of a pipeline to carry Iranian gas to Armenia as well as building a tunnel to shorten the transit road between the two countries.
