YEREVAN (Fact)The Iranian Embassy in Armenia Thursday refuted Azeri claims that Russian arms allegedly bound for Armenia were transported through Iran.
Reacting to a recent statement in the Azeri Mili Majlis (parliament) that Russian arms bound to Armenia were shipped to Caspian port of Enzeli in Iran–from where those shipmen’s were transported to Armenia–embassy spokesperson Majid Radjavi stated that this is a propaganda campaign by Azerbaijan.
"Our position on this is that this is a propaganda campaign which Azerbaijan uses from time to time," expressed Radjavi–adding "We unequivocally reject such a transfer of arms to Armenia from Iranian soil–and we deem such information as untrue."
Radjavi also said that "public speeches by Azeri officials must be more rational and realistic. Such statemen’s by unqualified and irresponsible Azeri officials only serve the interests of foreign powers."
In another misinformation attempt–the Azeri state news agency recently reported that during the recent Commonwealth of Independent States Inter-parliamentary Conference–the Armenian delegation left the meeting in protest.
Armenia’s National Assembly spokesperson Vahagn Mkrtchian told the Fact news agency that delegations from Armenia and Ukraine had informed the conference executives–well in advance–that would be departing early from the last session of the conference due to scheduling conflicts.
"The Armenian delegation did not leave the conference in protest–but rather due to technical reasons which were communicated in advance," Mkrtchian stated.
The parliamentary spokesperson also stated that during the said conference–members of the Armenian delegation introduced a resolution regarding the capture of reporters and peace keeping forces in the Karabakh conflict zone.
The Azeri delegation attempted to include a clause on so-called Armenian terrorism within Azeri territory. The resolution was adopted with the Azeri proposal–following remarks by the Armenian delegation on the matter.
Following the CIS Inter-parliamentary Conference–Azeri state-run media claimed victory for the Azeri delegation–saying that they were able to incorporate discussion on the Karabakh conflict in the agenda and move for the creation of a special council to investigate alleged Russian arms sales to Armenia.
Since the fall of the Soviet Union–Iran and Azerbaijan have been involved in many diplomatic disagreemets–stemming from Azerbaijan’s appeasment of the West.
