YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan) – Nagorno-Karabakh President Robert Kocharian issued a decree recently–establishing the activities of the state committee heading the preparations for celebrations of the 1700th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity in Armenia. The celebrations are to take place in 2001.
The presidential decree speaks of Armenia’s adoption of Christianity as the first of its kind–and it outlines the significant role the religion has played in the spiritual and cultural development of the Armenian people. Furthermore–the announcement points out the important contributions Armenia’s of Artsakh have made to the cultural and religious history of Armenia.
The state commission led by Prime Minister Leonard Petrossian has been given the task of implementing an extensive program of celebrations–which will include the involvement of the Holy See of Etchmiadzin–the Artsakh Diocese and several other cultural and scientific establishmen’s. In addition– the World Council of Churches–UNESCO and other international organizations will also be invited to participate.
