Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Tuesday met with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran.
Khamenei reiterated Tehran’s opposition to a so-called land “corridor,” known as the “Zangezur Corridor,” proposed by Azerbaijan that would become a link to Nakhichevn, the Mehr news agency reported.
Pashinyan is in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iran’s newly-elected president Masoud Pezeshkian.
Khamenei said that Iran still considers the so-called corridor to be detrimental to Armenia.
“We deeply believe in developing relations with Armenia. The cooperation between the two countries will continue based on interests and regardless of the policy of others. Foreigners must not create obstructions for countries’ relations with their neighbors,” Khamenei said.
He emphasized the importance of the preservation of Armenia’s territorial integrity, saying, “The Islamic Republic of Iran considers the ‘Zangezur Corridor’ to be detrimental for Armenia, and we maintain this position.”
Pashinyan said that Armenia has announced, on numerous occasions, that it does not accept any extraterritorial corridor in its territory. He also described the Armenian-Iranian ties as strategic.
“Pashinyan and Khamenei voiced that Armenia and Iran will continue steps aimed at the development of the warm and friendly relations for the benefit of the progress of the two nations,” a statement from the prime minister’s office said.
