LITTLE ARMENIA, CA—The Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School is very pleased to announce that our Academic Decathlon team captured first place in our division, Division IV, at the Southern California Private School Academic Decathlon held on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Bishop Alemany High School in Mission Hills. Our team also won second place in Division IV in the super quiz.
The Southern California Private School Academic Decathlon is divided into four divisions. Our division, Division IV, consists of ten schools: Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School, St Anthony’s, Mary Star of the Sea, Santa Clara, Whittier Christian, AGBU Manoogian-Demirgian, Bellarmine-Jefferson, Junipero Serra, Cathedral High School, and New Designs Charter School.
Not only did Rose and Alex Pilibos beat out the nine other schools to win first place in our division, but we also had two of the three top scorers in the division. Out of approximately 90 students competing in this division, Christine Batikian received a bronze medal as the third highest scorer, and Natalie Kalbakian scored more points than any of the 89 other students to win the gold medal as the top scoring student in Division IV.
The students participating in Academic Decathlon compete in ten different subjects: math, music, art, language and literature, social science, economics, essay, speech (prepared and impromptu), interview, and super quiz (this year’s topic was geology). The theme for this year’s competition was the Great Depression.
Our team this year was composed of eight students, all of whom did very well. Chris Khachatrian did not win any individual medals but was instrumental in helping us win our team medals. Leeza Karakouzian won a silver medal in math. Areg Ayvazian won a gold medal in music and a bronze medal in math. Levan Petrossian won a gold medal in geology, a silver medal in speech, and a bronze medal in math. Christine Batikian won a gold medal in math, and gold medal in geology and a bronze medal as the third place scorer of all the students in Division IV. Nazeli Ekimyan won a gold medal in speech, a silver medal in literature, a gold medal in music, and a silver medal in math. Haig Ter-Ghevondian won a silver medal in interview, a gold medal in literature, a gold medal in speech, a silver medal in music, a gold medal in social science, and a bronze medal in economics. Natalie Kalbakian won a bronze medal in interview, a gold medal in literature, a silver medal in art, a silver medal in economics, a gold medal in social science, a bronze medal in essay, and the gold medal for being the top scorer of all the students in Division IV.
“Naturally, we are very proud of our students and their achievements,” said Nazo Apanian, principal of Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School, “and of our faculty who have been so supportive of our students and provided them with a superior education. To win first place ahead of nine other fine schools and for our students to score so well against almost 90 other students is a great accomplishment. We hope for many more successes in the future.”
I hope they don’t waste their time at law schools. Apparently, our Armenian attorneys haven’t do so well in Con Law.

As to the comment by Kiazer, I am a graduate of Pilibos ’89 and am pleased to inform you I received the American Jurisprudence Award in Constitutional Law for having received the highest grade out of a class of 200 students who attended undergraduate schools the likes of Harvard, Yale, etc.
What they did not have, was a degree from Pilibos and the honor to have been taught by fine educators/mentors such as the late Mr. Chekerdemian and Dr. Tashjian and many others whom I owe my gratitude.
I am not only proud of my fellow Pilibosians who continue to strive and do well annually at the Academic Decathalon and put our little school on the map, but with their accomplishments thereafter. Ghetzeh!!!

Having just complete a short video for AGBU MDS and, now, seeing the results of the Academic Decathlon, it would appear that the future for Armenian-Americans is in good hands. KEEP WORKING HARD…and CONGRATS!!!!
