LOS ANGELES—Every year students, teachers, and parents wait for the first day of the school year and excitement fills the air. This year there was an invigorating feeling at Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School.
On August 19, 2013 the new school year commenced with an opening ceremony. Students, faculty, and parents were at school bright and early, ready to start the new academic year.
As the opening ceremony began, students from each section held up signs that represented the new school motto, “Dare to…”
Each class had a student come up to the front and recite his or her assigned motto; “Dare to be Dynamic, Dare to be Adventurous, Dare to be Unique, Dare to be Influential.”
Archpriest Vicken Vasilian gave his benediction for the new school year, followed by Principal Dr. Dorian who addressed the students about her wishes for each student this school year.
This year Dr. Dorian addressed each section of the student body during her speech, as she discussed the importance of having a dream, a goal to strive toward. Her speech foretold the school’s expectations for every student, as she explained that all students can succeed, if they “Dare to Dream Big.” A key point in her speech was for students to take leadership in their school, and she reminded students to dare to be good scholars, citizens of our country, and stewards to our Armenian culture.
At the end of the ceremony, the seniors walked the first grade students to their new classrooms. A wonderful nostalgic feeling filled the air because many of the seniors started as Kindergarteners or even pre-school students at Pilibos, with fond memories of their first days of school.
Also in attendance were last year’s graduating seniors, the class of 2013. It was truly heartfelt to see most of the graduating class return to wish their best to the student body on their first day of school. Pilibos will always be their family and their home.
Finally, an enthusiastic student body and faculty returned to their classrooms to begin the school year with a new uplifted attitude ready to take on another year with pride and the drive for success.
