STEPANAKERT—On November 16 with the cooperation of “Mezzo Production” and the Ministry of Culture and Youth Affairs of NKR the well-known Mexican singer, composer and producer Placido Domingo Jr. arrived in Artsakh on a three-day visit.
Placido Fransisco Domingo Jr. is the son of the world-famous Spanish tenor Placido Domingo. He was born in 1965 in Mexico City. He has written songs both for his father and such distinguished singers as Jose Carreras, Luciano Pavarotti, Diana Ross, Leona Mitchell and others. In 2009 Placido Domingo Jr. participated in the release of the album “Amore Infinito” (Eternal Love). The album includes verses by Pope John Paul II, performed by his father. In 2010 he was recognized as “Person of the year” at the Latin “Grammy” awards ceremony.
Аs part of the visit Placido Domingo Jr. gave a concert in Stepanakert, during which the audience had the opportunity to enjoy Spanish, Mexican and Argentinian ballads to the accompaniment of the pianist Armen Aghajanyan. The warm and friendly atmosphere in the hall largely contributed to the success of the event.
On November 17 Artsakh Republic President Bako Sahakyan received the singer. President Sahakyan expressed gratitude to the singer for concertizing in Artsakh, noting that it contributed greatly to developing culture and deepening intercultural dialogue, adding that it possessed a message of peace. Issues related to realizing a number of cultural programs in the country were touched upon too.
Placido Domingo Jr. also visited the monastic complex of Gandzasar, got acquainted with the museums of Shoushi and visited the Ministry of Cultre and Youth Affairs of NKR where he participated in the founding of the “Alley of Peace” planting its first silver fir tree.
Round the traditional Artsakh table the singer spoke about his impressions of the visit, the rich culture and traditions of the country and emphasized the hospitality and warm welcome of the people of Artsakh.
Placido Domingo Jr. arrived in Artsakh within the framework of Classical Music Week and will perform with the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia on November 21 in Yerevan.
The visit and concert by the Mexican singer, songwriter, and composer enraged Azerbaijan. The Head of the Press Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Elman Abdullayev issued a statement on this occasion, Armenpress reports citing Haqqin.az.
Elman Abdullayev reiterated Azerbaijan’s standpoint, according to which any visit to Nagorno Karabakh without permission from Baku will be considered illegal. He noted that they are currently considering the case of Plácido Domingo Jr’s visit.
When asked whether he was afraid of getting on Baku’s “blacklist”, Domingo answered, “I do not understand much in the local politics. Is there any possibility that they will keep me in prison? I don’t mind, as long as they give me a pillow and a blanket, as well as a pack of cigarettes and coffee. The only thing I want is not to be shot the next morning.”
Plácido Domingo Jr. on November 17 performed a concert in Stepanakert, the capital of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic.
“In Karabakh I will perform eleven songs from my CD and will try to perform one of the songs of the great Charles Aznavour. During the years I have managed to communicate with Aznavour and had the success to see how my father and Aznavour sang in a duet,” Domingo Jr. said before the concert.
Besides Artsakh, Plácido Domingo Jr. will give his first concert in Yerevan on November 21, jointly with the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia. Plácido Domingo Jr. will perform in Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall, as well as at the Mezzo Club.
