In his congratulatory address marking the May 28 celebration of independence–President Kocharian told the nation: "The birth of the Republic of Armenia was the outcome of the May 1918 battles. After centuries-long interruption–the restoration of Armenian sovereignty was a turning point in our nation’s history. With this–we returned to the international political arena. With this–new situations emerged–new perspectives for multilateral development of our country and people. Despite its short existence–the Republic of Armenia was able to pass on to the coming generations a new system of values based on a national mentality–civil consciousness and democratic principles. Once again I congratulate us all on the 85th anniversary of the independence of the Republic. . . and wish for a continued and firm commitment to carry out the national renaissance signified by May 28.
