An annual event that students look forward to every year at Sahag-Mesrob Armenian Christian School is the ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International) Speech Meet. This year’s Speech Meet was held on Friday, May 21, at Pasadena Christian School in Pasadena, California. A total of ten Southern California Christian schools were in attendance at this year’s event with more than 250 student participants ranging from first to sixth grade.
Students who are chosen to participate in this event demonstrate outstanding public speaking skills and have a natural poise in front of a large audience. Each student at the Speech Meet must recite from memory. Categories include Poetry, Fable and Folklore, Bible Memorization, Dramatic Bible Prose, Patriotic Oration, and Original Speech. Ribbons are presented at the end of the meet to each of the participants. A blue ribbon is awarded to the best prepared and poised speakers.
Since Sahag-Mesrob began participating in the ACSI Speech Meet over twenty years ago its students have received the highest praises from the event’s judges. This year was not an exception. Blue ribbons were awarded to 33 our of 38 total Sahag-Mesrob participants. Students, teachers, and parents alike were pleased with the school’s results and a party was held the following week to recognize the students’ achievements.
Sahag-Mesrob hopes to continue preparing its students in public speaking and will continue to participate in the annual ACSI Speech Meet. Every April Sahag-Mesrob’s middle school also participates in the ACSI Junior High School Speech. Ultimately, by participating in such events, our school aims to showcase the talents of its finest and brightest students.
