YEREVAN (RFE/RL)–A US Senator visiting Armenia’said he is "impressed" with the authorities’ commitment to democratization–economic reform and regional integration–following meetings with President Robert Kocharian and Prime Minister Armen Darbinian on Friday.
"I have been very much impressed with their commitment to the vision of democratization–economic reform and economic integration in the region," said Sen. Carl Levin–a veteran Democrat lawmaker from Michigan–speaking to reporters. "I will take back some very positive feelings about these meetings," he said.
Levin arrived in Armenia the same day from the troubled Serbian province of Kosovo–making a short stop in Moscow. He is expected to proceed to Turkey late on Saturday. No other details are known. Levin stressed his close ties with the "very dynamic Armenian-American community in Michigan."
"I have been very active in working with [the Armenian-Americans] on a number of matters of importance to Armenia over the years," he said.
