YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The hearing of mercenaries allegedly working for Azerbaijan in Karabakh began in Kiev. Five Ukrainian citizens are charged with violating Part 1 of Article 63 (mercenary) of the Ukrainian Criminal Code–foreseeing a sentence of up to 12 years of imprisonment.
According to preliminary data–one of the defendants has recruited Ukrainian youth and sent them to help Azeris fight Armenia’s in Karabakh.
According to Kievskie Vedomosti–in May of 1994 an 18-member assault group was arrested at Borispol airport. The group was on its way to Karabakh. At that time–the Ukrainian special services also discovered the leader of the group–an Azeri citizen Fizuli Gulu Ogli Verdiev–and his three assistants. That group is currently serving time in prison. If the new group of mercenaries is charged with the crime they are being tried for–the punishment promises to be severe.
