BAKU—Azerbaijan’s closest strategic ally, Turkey has once again voiced its ultimate support for its neighboring country. This time Ankara revealed the newest aspiration of its military cooperation with Baku – the Turkish leadership wants the Azerbaijani army to reach the “best international standards.”
“We want the Azerbaijani armed forces to advance to the level of NATO standards,” Turkish Ambassador to Baku, Ismail Alper Coskun said.
Assessing the ongoing joint military drills with Azerbaijani and Turkish troops in Baku and in Nakhijevan, Coskun told local media that Turkey cooperates tightly with Azerbaijan in the field of military along with many other spheres.
“Over the last few years we have conducted similar military exercises. The main goal is to contribute to Azerbaijan’s development in this field. The Turkish army is one of the strongest in NATO. Moving forward with our military cooperation we want to make our contribution to brother country Azerbaijan’s military,” Coskun said.
Does that mean that they will scrap all that Russian military hardware, and replace it with western military technology?
At least the Azeris have a head start with all those weapon purchases from Russia last year.
Turkey having the second most might in NATO begs the question, who are they really protecting themselves from, or better yet, who they are protecting? All the surrounding countries put together are nothing but a team of glorified boy scouts, so why did the west want Turkey to be so strong? The argument of the USSR is bogus for two reasons. First, the obvious, the USSR does not exist anymore, and second, even during the height of the cold war Turkey was no match against the USSR. So who is it that they’re really protecting? The answer is obvious, but no one wants to admit the obvious. The silent regional powers are all in the charade. Armenia’s hope of territorial reparation in the current state of affairs is next to impossible. Begging or demanding recognition is futile. No amount of lip service will change the dynamics unless there is a major fundamental shift in alliance in the region and beyond.
BOTH OF THESE COUNTRIES ARE SPENDING/WASTING MONEY ON UNNEEDED ARMS. IF THEY COULD ONLY LEARN TO MAKE NICE!! I THINK THEY ARE NOT ENLIGHTENED. GOVERNANCE THAT IS DICTATORIAL WILL NOT SELF CORRECT AND WILL ULTIMATELY FOLLOW THE PATH OF OTHER IMPLODED ARAB STATES. TURKEY WILL REFORM EVENTUALLY IN 10-15 YEARS BUT THE AZERI’S ARE IN FOR A SHOCK AND IF/WHEN THEY ATTACK KARABAGH AND LOSE BADLY THEY WILL PROBABLY END UP USING THE TROOPS ON THEIR OWN PEOPLE,
How long will Armenia sit and twiddle her thumbs?

Turkey is right, Azerbaijan should be a member of NATO
