YEREVAN—Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on Tuesday received Uruguay’s Vice President Danilo Astori.
Greeting the guest, the president noted with satisfaction that the past year was a promising and important period for bilateral relations between Armenia and Uruguay and a good opportunity to deepen mutual ties between the two countries.
According to a press release by the presidential press office, the sides highlighted the importance of parliamentary democracy, agreeing mutually that the two countries’ parliamentary friendship groups helped strengthen the partnership further.
President Sarkisian thanked Uruguay for the country’s invaluable contribution to the recognition of the Armenian Genocide..
The Armenian leader also highly praised the country’s balanced stance on the Artsakh conflict settlement efforts.
On Monday, Armenia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Edward Nalbandian met with Astori.
Welcoming the official, Nalbandian mentioned that Armenia highly appreciates friendly relations with Uruguay, and despite the thousands of kilometers of distance between Armenia and Uruguay, both states are close to one another, and are united by strong friendship and commitment to universal values.
The Vice President of Uruguay expressed gratitude for the warm reception and highlighted that Uruguay greatly commends and attaches significance to the friendship with Armenia and the Armenian people. He noted that both friendly states share historic and cultural commonalities. Astori highlighted the presence of a large Armenian community in Uruguay and its activity to deepen cooperation with Armenia.
The sides underscored that arrangements reached and documents signed during the state visit of the President of Armenia to Uruguay this year gave a new impetus to bilateral cooperation.
Nalbandian mentioned that being the first country to recognize the Armenian Genocide in 1965, Uruguay launched the process of its international recognition and condemnation. The Minister expressed gratitude for the decision to establish the Armenian Genocide Museum in Montevideo.
Nalbandian briefed Astori about regional issues and the approaches of Armenia towards the resolution of those issues. Astori said that Uruguay will continue to support the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group towards the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
