YEREVAN—Armenia’s national soccer team has recruited Armenian-American Yura Movsisyan, 23, to join the team. He will play for the first time in a friendly match against Iran on August 11.
Previously a player in the American Major League Soccer teams the Kansas City Wizards and Real Salt Lake (Utah), Movsisyan is currently playing for the Randers in Denmark’s top league.
Born in Baku in 1987, Movsisyan and his family settled in Los Angeles after the Azeri pogroms against the Armenian population. He played for Pasadena High School and Pasadena City College before he was drafted into MLS in 2006.
The International Soccer Federation (FIFA) ranks Armenia 96th out of 202 national teams worldwide.
The friendly games come ahead of European Cup qualifiers that begin in September, in which Armenia will compete in a group with Russia, Slovakia, Ireland, Macedonia and Andorra, with the top two teams advancing to the 2012 Cup that will be hosted by Poland and Ukraine.
