Armenia on Monday applauded Iran for its ongoing commitment to Armenia’s territorial integrity, as well as the strengthening and advancement of relations between the two countries.
“I must emphasize again that the Government of the Republic of Armenia highly appreciates Iran’s succinct, principled and public position on the need to fully and unconditionally respect the territorial integrity of Armenia and the inviolability of its internationally recognized borders,” Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan said during remarks at a special ceremony marking the 46th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Iran.
The event, attended by Grigoryan, took place on Monday at Iran’s Embassy in Yerevan.
Iran has stepped up its opposition to Baku’s scheme to develop a so-called land “corridor” connecting Azerbaijan with Nakhichevan through Armenia.
President Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran reiterated Tehran’s position last week when he hosted Hikmet Hajiyev, the special adviser to Azerbaijan’s president.
Iran’s Ambassador to Armenia, Mehdi Sobhani, on Thursday warned that the so-called “Zangezur Corridor” would be a detriment to both Iran and Armenia.
“Only Armenia and Iran are aligned in their position on the so-called ‘Zangezur corridor,’” Sobhani said at a press briefing.
“Only Iran supports Armenia, opposing the so-called ‘Zangezur corridor.’ Of all the countries in the region, only Iran stands by Armenia on this issue. We have no disagreements with Armenia on the so-called ‘Zangezur corridor,’” he added.
