Expressing concern about the security of the region, Armenia’s Foreign Ministry condemned “actions against” Iran after the Israeli airstrikes on that country on Saturday.
Israel’s airstrikes against Iran were in response to Iran’s attacks earlier this month on Israel. Reportedly, four Iranian officers were killed as a result of the Israeli strikes. Israel said that it only hit military facilities and that no nuclear or oil production sites were targeted.
“Armenia condemns activities aimed at undermining international security expressed also in the actions against the Islamic Republic of Iran last week. We are deeply concerned about developments in the wider region,” Armenia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement published on X on Monday.
Official Yerevan has expressed its deep concern over developments in the region after recent Israeli strikes against Iran.
“We hope that diplomacy will enable protection of international law and prevention of further undesirable developments,” the statement added.
It is worth noting that official Yerevan did not issue a similar statement following Israeli attacks on Lebanon, where there is a large Armenian community.
Relations between Armenia and Israel have been strained since Yerevan officially recognized the Palestinian State in June.
Saying that it was heeding a United Nations General Assembly decision, Armenia’s Foreign Ministry in June announced Yerevan’s recognition of Palestine and called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
The Palestinian Authority hailed Yerevan’s decision, while Israel’s government condemned the move, summoning Armenia’s Ambassador to Israel for a “harsh reprimand.” At the time, Armenia’s Foreign Ministry said that Ambassador Arman Hakobyan did not meet with Israel’s foreign ministry officials.
