YEREVAN(Armenpress) — 15 Armenians from Aleppo and 3 from Damascus have been nominated as candidates for Syrian parliamentary elections to be held on April 13. In the upcoming days it will become clear who will be the final candidates to enter into the electoral struggle.
Earlier Arevelk periodical had informed that the candidates nominated in Damascus are Vahe Mahshikian, Yerato Grigorian and Nora Arisian. The Armenian community in Damascus has the right to have at least one parliamentary seat but efforts will be made to obtain 3 seats.
The Syrian electoral commission announced that 8,000 and 681 candidates from provinces, including Armenians, have been nominated since March 1. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad scheduled April 13 for the elections. Elections will be conducted in 15 polling districts for 250 seats. Members of parliament are elected directly, confidentially and by 4-year term.
