LA CRESCENTA—Honors student Christopher Olmassakian represented Armenia during a Model United Nations gathering from June 23 to 29 at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
The week-long program focused on foreign affairs and international diplomacy, presenting participants with realistic simulations of global issues, including the war in Iraq and the human rights crisis in Syria. Students worked in committees and as part of the UN Security Council. In his role as Armenia’s representative, Olmassakian authored position papers reflecting his nation’s stance on topics of global concern.
“Model U.N. was a tremendous learning opportunity, but representing Armenia made it particularly special and memorable,” Olmassakian said.
To prepare for the program, Olmassakian researched and analyzed current issues confronting Armenia, including regional conflicts, the influx of immigrants escaping violence in Syria, and the political status of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Olmassakian will be starting his sophomore year at Crescenta Valley High School this fall, where he is a part of the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program and a member of numerous student groups, including the Armenian Club. His goal is to attend a top-tier university and earn a doctorate in science.
